Choose Claude Code when success means more than generating a code block: the agent must inspect the repository, call existing scripts, run tests, investigate failures and leave evidence another developer can review. Terminal access makes it easier to use the same linters, migration tools, package managers and deployment checks your project already trusts.
That flexibility also raises the supervision requirement. Scope permissions, keep secrets out of logs, make destructive operations explicit and require test evidence for high-risk changes. Agent autonomy is valuable only when failure is visible and recovery is straightforward.
Cursor wins when the editor is the team’s control room
Choose Cursor when developers spend most of the day reading, navigating and adjusting code and want AI assistance in that same visual loop. Inline edits and a shared editor surface can reduce context switching for small changes, code exploration and review.
Cursor also supports remote agent work, so it is no longer accurate to describe it as only autocomplete in a VS Code-style editor. The important distinction is how the team wants to launch, inspect and take over work—not whether either product can act as an agent.
Using Claude Code and Cursor together
A combined workflow can be rational: use Cursor for daily navigation, localized edits and visual review, then use Claude Code for a bounded repository task that relies heavily on command-line tooling. Keep the tasks on separate branches or worktrees, define the acceptance checks up front and let only one agent own a file set at a time.
The combined setup is wasteful when both products are used for the same prompts with no measurement. Track completed tasks, review time, rework and failures for two weeks. Keep the second subscription only if it removes a real bottleneck.
